The good thing about doing spa treatments at home is you can easily mix speciality store spa products with items you find around your house. In this 3 stage spa treatment for your feet, we use two store spa products and a bottle of stout. Together, they make a great treatment that will condition your feet, and leave you calmed by the scents.

The great thing about this treatment is the nutrients in the beer (yes there are some) are really good for your skin and nervous system. In particular, stout contains large amounts of the B group vitamins that help develop skin, nail and hair. Also stout contains folic acid, which is essential for healthy blood cells. Finally, the hops used to make stout have a great calming effect.

What you will need

Avery stout
Stout

You need a 12oz bottle of stout - any brand will do. If the beery smell is too much for you, a drop or two of vanilla essence will tame it.

foot spa
Foot spa

You don't really need one of these, but you may have one lying about. If you do, dust it off, and give it a try. Otherwise, just go for anything you can fit your feet in.

Pumice stone

Cheap, easy to find, and incredibly effective. We like the No More Rough Stuff Pumice and there's also something delightfully 70s about the Pumice on a Ropeboth of which are from The Body Shop.

Hemp foot protector

This is a thick foot cream from The Body Shop with hemp oil and lanolin to soften the roughest of feet

Per treatment, this costs about $3, compared to around $40 in a day spa

How to do it

This is a three part treatment. The first part is a soak with the stout. Just add the whole of the bottle to hot water in your foot spa (or big bowl). The warmth of the water will open up your pores, and increase the blood flow in your feet. Those B vitamins will get to work! Give the soak about 10 to 15 minutes to work.

After the soak, dry your feet and get ready for part 2: the rubbing with the pumice. As we've said before, you don't want to go mad at this stage. Smooth, don't remove. You don't have to get all your calluses off in one session, regular soaks and scrubs will eventually leave your feet baby soft. If you rub too hard, you will leave your skin irritated, and we don't want that, do we. After a rub, you should rinse your feet in warm clean water.

Finally, gently dry your feet and smooth on the hemp foot protector. It goes in very easily. Now if your feet are in really bad shape, The Body Shop also sell Booties Moisture Natural which are booties you wear overnight, and help keep creams and lotions close to your skin for longer. If you are using these, you put on plenty of the foot protector, slip the booties on and sleep. In the morning, you'll be left with amazingly soft feet, and not too much of a mess.
